By The Rivers Of Babylon

Sheet Music & Lyrics

This By The Rivers Of Babylon Rastafarian song is based on the Biblical story of how the Kingdom of Israel was divided in two. The Kingdom of Israel to the North and the Kingdom of Judah (hence the name Jew) to the south. The lyrics, quoted directly from Psalm 137:1-4, show the yearnings of the Jewish people in exile.

According to the Rastafarian faith, Babylon represents any oppressor (government, police, etc.) and the repressive society, and the Jamaican people longing for freedom.

By The Rivers Of Babylon

By the rivers of Babylon
Where he sat down
And there he wept when he remembered Zion.

Oh from wicked, carry us away from captivity
Required from us a song
How can we singing out for song in a strange land.

So let the words of our mouth
And the meditations of our hearts
Be acceptable in thy sight
O-verride

By the rivers of Babylon
Where he sat down
And there he wept when he remembered Zion.

Oh from wicked, carry us away from captivity
Required from us a song
How can we singing out for song in a strange land.
How can we singing out for song in a strange land.
